What's it like to be a member of the CMB?
What is the time commitment?
The time commitment ranges from approximately 4.5 hours on non-home football game weeks to 6.5+ hours on home football game weeks. The full band rehearses from 6-8:20PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week during the fall semester, as well as on Fridays from 6-8PM on home football game weeks. The Color Guard and Drumline sections have an additional rehearsal on home football game weeks. The full band also rehearses the day of every home football game.
Is there an audition?
Yes, all prospective members should arrange a meeting with the Directors during their summer orientation session, which will include a brief audition. Color Guard and Drumline will also need to audition at their respective precamps as well.
Does the band travel to away games and post-season games?
The band usually travels to at least one away game each season as well as any post-season games. In 2019, the band traveled to Durham for the regular season game against Duke, to Charlotte for the ACC Championship and to Miami for the Orange Bowl.
Are there opportunities for leadership in the band?
Student leadership is critical to the success of the CMB. In addition to becoming a Drum Major, there are dozens of leadership and support staff roles available in the band; learn more about each of them here.
How much does it cost?
$40 is the cost of marching shoes and gloves. Everything else (instruments, uniforms, apparel, travel, lodging, meals, etc.) are provided for.
How many games does the band perform at?
The band performs at every single home game and smaller, volunteer ensembles will travel to some away games.
